Lucien makes us both dinner while I peruse his shelves, finding each title more intriguing than the last as the scents of fresh cooked salmon, greens, and garlic buttered potatoes fill the lowest floor of the house. Once weâve both eaten, me while I leaf through one of the topography books, and him whilst watching me with half interest, he disappears upstairs, leaving me alone with maps more complicated than anything Iâve ever seen.
For you see, the dimension of Aetheria isnât just North, South, East, and West, but takes on a whole new third dimension. Four floating continents, each as enormous and diverse as the last, hovering at different altitudes in what appears to be, but obviously is not a gravity-less void. I donât know how the landmasses are hanging in mid-air, but thereâs nothing to address the cause in anything Iâve read so far, leaving me wondering if I should simply accept it as magic and leave it at that.
As Iâm turning the page from the current map of Drakos Vale Iâm studying, I hear footsteps and allow my eyes to lift, however reluctantly, from the thick parchment pages to find Lucien rounding the corner of the kitchenâs broadly arched entryway.
His change in attire startles me, the contrast from his earlier turtleneck and dress pants almost laughable. Though, his clothing is actually not what first draws my eye. No, what I notice first and what causes me to balk is his hair.
Pristine arctic blond locks have been expertly braided so the poker straight tresses are pulled back tightly from his neck. The braid is intricate, somewhere between a fishtail and French in style and pulls his features taut, causing his cheekbones to become even more prominent than usual and his brow to seem heavier as it casts dark shadows over the masculine deep set of his eyes.
He wasnât wrong when heâd said my hair wasnât as well kept.
His eyes are covered by a scaled metal visor, his torso wrapped in leather that cuts close to his silhouette and is layered up the sleeves to give the effect of yet more scales. Buckles and thick straps wrap around his waist for no other purpose I can discern than aesthetics, before I find his long legs wearing a pair of velvet riding trousers that arenât unlike what you would expect to see on a young girl during her first dressage event. However, thereâs nothing feminine about the cut as the fabric clings provocatively to all his bulges, the taught muscles of his quads and calves not hidden in the slightest for anyone who dares sneak a peek. Finally, I find his feet bare on the hardwood and scowl before remembering that he hadnât commissioned new riding boots until late this afternoon. The person making them must have one hell of a turnaround for him to expect them to be ready in time for tonightâs event.
Pulling on a pair of leather gloves I hadnât noticed him holding in matching onyx velvet, he gestures for me to begin getting ready to depart.
